About the contributors: April Jackson Visual Description: April Jackson is a Black woman with shoulder-length braids, wearing a black blazer in front of a green background. April Jackson, name sign "A" on middle of chin, Kansas City, Missouri native who now calls Maryland home. April was born and raised as a translator from 6th generation Deaf family. Jackson grew up in public school then earned her bachelor of science degree in Business Administration and minor in Fine Arts specializing in Theatre and Production at Gallaudet University in 2012. Jackson became Deaf interpreter professional in 2018. She maintains a part time interpreting schedule in addition to teaching Gallaudet University and Community College of Baltimore County ASL courses and leading interpreting workshops. Jackson specializing in the interpretations of Black American Sign Language (BASL), platform/conference, medical, legal, Tactile/ProTactile, International sign and theatre settings - locally, nationally and internationally. During her special moments, April loves to exercise, travel, socialize and spend time with her gorgeous two Deaf children, Akeisha and Keivonn. Antoine Hunter Visual Description: Antoine Hunter is a Black and Indigenous two spirit person with long locs and a bushy beard. He wears a black v-neck t-shirt in front of a red background. Bay Area native, Antoine Hunter also known Purple Fire Crow is an award-winning Internationally-known African-American, Indigenous, Deaf, Disable, choreographer, dancer, actor, instructor, speaker, Producer and Deaf advocate. He creates opportunities for Disabled, Deaf and hearing artists and produces Deaf-friendly events, and founded the Urban Jazz Dance Company and Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival. Antoine’s work has been performed globally, most recently in Turkey, UK and Russia. He has lectured across the U.S. including at Kennedy Center’s VSA, Harvard and Duke University, and the National Assembly of State Arts. In 2019 alone, his company Urban Jazz Dance Company, an ensemble of professional Deaf and Hearing dancers, performed for and engaged more than 4,200 schoolchildren. His shoe company DropLabs and Susan Paley just released an innovative product to help people feel music through their shoes. He is Vice President of Deaf Counseling, Advocacy and Referral Agency (DCARA's) Board. DCARA is a non-profit, community-based social service agency serving the deaf community. Established in 1962 as one of the first deaf-run agencies in the country. Hunter serves on the boards of Dance/USA, DCARA, BABDA and councils for CalArts Alumnx and Intrinsic Arts. www.RealUrbanJazzDance.com Ashanti Monts-Tréviska Visual Description: Ashanti Monts-Tréviska is a Black nonbinary person with natural curly chin-length hair, wearing rectangular glasses and leaf-shaped earrings. Ashanti Monts-Tréviska, a Florida native of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Indigenous descent, had a journey of discovering self through various life experience including being in mainstream schools most of their life. Monts-Tréviska received their Master's in Transpersonal Psychology from Sofia University of Palo Alto. They is currently working on completing dissertation proposal this year as a Ph.D student of Transformative Studies at California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) of San Francisco. They look forward to defending their dissertation as transformative systems thinker next year. They are also working to become a certified mindfulness mentor-teacher. Monts-Tréviska is currently co-manages a worker owned & member owned cooperative, Cascadia Deaf Nation which works to co-create solutions as products & services as a multipurpose social enterprise in Bellingham, WA. They were the recipient of Martin Luther King, Jr Award last year for being a transformative activist in the community. Monts-Treviska shares 2 two intuitive cats with their longtime partner. During the leisure time, Monts-Tréviska enjoys reading thought provoking books, coloring mandalas, doing meditation to maintain inner peace, watching movies & tv shows that nurture the soul, and engaging in deep, meaningful conversations.
